Upfront cost — no obligation A power flush and a magnetic filter both deal with sludge in your heating system, but they do different jobs. Here’s the difference, and why most systems benefit from both.
A power flush is a one-off deep clean
A power flush pushes a high-flow mix of water and cleaning chemicals through your existing pipework and radiators to break up and remove sludge, rust and debris that’s already built up. It’s a single, thorough clean-out for a system that’s already showing signs of contamination, such as cold radiators or a noisy, underperforming boiler.

A magnetic filter is ongoing protection
A magnetic filter is fitted permanently to the system, close to the boiler, and continuously catches magnetic debris circulating in the water before it can build up in radiators and pipework. It doesn’t clean an already-sludged system, but it significantly slows down how quickly new sludge accumulates going forward.

Why most systems benefit from both
The two work well together: a power flush clears out existing contamination, and a magnetic filter helps stop it building up again afterwards. A filter is fitted as standard on every boiler installation we carry out, and it’s worth adding to an existing system too if you don’t already have one, especially straight after a power flush.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a power flush if I already have a magnetic filter?
A filter slows down new build-up but doesn't clean out sludge that's already there, so you may still need a flush if the system was contaminated before the filter was fitted.
Does a magnetic filter replace the need for a power flush?
No — they do different jobs. A flush cleans an already-sludged system; a filter helps keep a clean system clean.
Is a magnetic filter fitted as standard on a new boiler?
Yes, we fit one as standard as part of every boiler installation.
Should I get a magnetic filter fitted after a power flush?
It's a good idea, since it helps protect the freshly cleaned system from building sludge up again.
