What does a gas leak smell like — and what are the other warning signs?
The clearest sign is the distinctive ‘rotten egg’ smell added to gas. Others include a hissing sound near pipework or an appliance, a pilot light that keeps blowing out, dead or dying houseplants near the suspected area, or an unusually high gas bill. Physical symptoms such as headaches, dizziness or nausea that improve when you leave the house can point to a leak or carbon monoxide, and both need urgent attention. See our full signs of a gas leak guide for the complete list.

How a Gas Safe engineer locates and fixes a gas leak
We carry out a gas tightness test to confirm whether the system is losing gas, then trace the leak to its source, whether that’s a joint, a length of pipework, or a faulty appliance connection. Once located, we repair or replace the affected component and re-test to confirm the system is sound and safe before signing off.

A recent gas leak trace in East Ham
In East Ham, a tenant smelled gas and called Cadent’s emergency line. Cadent attended, traced the smell to near the cooker, and isolated the gas supply to the whole property to make it safe, leaving the tenant without gas for cooking, heating or hot water. The landlord called us, and we were on site within two hours. We traced the leak to the gas hob itself, disconnected it, and confirmed there were no further leaks anywhere on the supply, all within an hour of arriving, so the gas supply could be safely restored to the rest of the property. Once the landlord had ordered a replacement hob, we went back and fitted the new gas hob as soon as it was delivered, so the property had a full, safe gas supply again.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does a gas leak smell like?
Gas has a distinctive added smell, often described as rotten eggs or sulphur. If you notice it, treat it as urgent.
What should I do if I smell gas?
Open windows and doors, avoid electrical switches and naked flames, turn off the gas at the meter if safe, leave if the smell is strong, and call 0800 111 999. Then call us to locate and repair the cause.
How do you find a gas leak?
We carry out a tightness test to confirm a loss of gas, then trace it to the exact source using detection equipment, repair it, and re-test to confirm the system is safe.
Is a gas leak dangerous?
Yes — leaks risk fire, explosion and carbon monoxide exposure. They must only be handled by a Gas Safe registered engineer.
How long does it take to fix a gas leak?
It depends on where the leak is and what's causing it. Many minor leaks — a loose fitting or a faulty appliance connection — are found and made safe within a couple of hours. Leaks in concealed pipework take longer, because the pipe has to be traced and exposed first. We always make the property safe first, then give you a clear idea of the repair and timescale before carrying it out.
How much does gas leak detection cost?
It depends entirely on where the leak is and what it takes to fix — a loose fitting is a different job to concealed pipework. We trace and confirm the fault, then give you a clear price before any repair work starts.
Can I try to find or fix a leak myself?
No. Gas work is illegal for anyone who isn't Gas Safe registered. Make the area safe, call the emergency line if you smell gas, and let a registered engineer handle it.
