Local Engineers
Upfront cost — no obligation Some gas problems can’t wait. If you smell gas, your boiler has failed in cold weather, or you’ve lost all your heating and hot water, you need a Gas Safe registered engineer quickly — not a callback in a few days’ time. Gas First provides emergency gas engineer cover across East London, working from local bases in Bow and Dagenham. We prioritise safety first: making the situation safe, then diagnosing and fixing the fault. If you can smell gas right now, turn off the supply at the meter, open windows, avoid switches and naked flames, and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 first, then call us.
What counts as a gas emergency?
Treat it as an emergency if you smell gas, hear hissing near a gas appliance or pipe, have no heating or hot water in cold conditions, or your boiler has locked out and won’t restart. Carbon monoxide symptoms — headaches, dizziness or nausea that ease when you leave the house and return when you go back in, or a CO alarm sounding — are also emergencies: get fresh air and call for help immediately. If you’re not sure whether your situation counts, it’s always better to call and ask than to leave it — we would rather reassure you over the phone than have you sit with a genuine risk.

What happens when an emergency gas engineer arrives
Our first job is always to make your home safe — isolating the gas supply or appliance if needed, before anything else. We then diagnose the fault properly rather than guessing, and carry out the repair on the spot where parts allow, since our vans carry the parts we use most often. If a specific part has to be ordered, we make the situation safe, explain exactly what’s needed, and arrange the fastest possible follow-up visit. You’ll always know what we’ve found and what happens next before we leave.

Why Gas First for an emergency call-out
Being genuinely local matters most in an emergency — it’s the difference between same-day help and waiting until next week. We work from bases in Bow and Dagenham, covering Stratford, Canary Wharf, Isle of Dogs, East Ham, Ilford, Barking, Romford, Rainham, Hornchurch, Elm Park and Upminster, day and night. There’s no fixed call-out fee added on top — we diagnose the problem and give you a clear price before any work starts, whether it turns out to be a five-minute fix or a full repair. And if what looked like an emergency turns out to be something that can be scheduled properly, the same engineer can go straight into a full boiler repair without a second visit.

A recent emergency call-out on Barking Road, Canning Town
On Barking Road in Canning Town, a customer’s carbon monoxide alarm started sounding, and they called Cadent’s emergency line. Cadent attended and, as a precaution, shut off the gas supply to the property, leaving the customer without heating, hot water or a working cooker in the middle of winter, but couldn’t find a fault themselves, since testing individual appliances isn’t part of their role, and advised the customer to call a gas engineer. We attended the same day. We tested every gas appliance in the property along with the CO alarm itself, and found no trace of carbon monoxide anywhere, but fitted a new CO alarm from our van stock anyway, in case the original had been faulty. While we were there, we found the Cadent engineer outside a neighbouring property responding to an identical call. Several flats on the street had alarms sounding at the same time. It later emerged the source wasn’t inside either flat at all: Cadent traced it to a restaurant on the ground floor and shut its gas appliances down. It is exactly why a working CO alarm matters, and why an alarm sounding should never be ignored, even when nothing is found in your own home.
