Upfront cost — no obligation L2 on an Ideal Logic (and other Ideal combis) is an ignition lockout — the boiler has tried to light and failed, so it has shut down to keep you safe. It’s one of the more common Ideal codes, and while some causes are simple, an ignition fault itself needs a Gas Safe engineer. Gas First are Gas Safe registered (587401) Ideal engineers across East London — here’s what L2 means and what to do.
What the L2 code means
L2 is an ignition lockout: the boiler has run its ignition sequence, failed to establish or detect a flame, and locked out rather than keep trying. It is a safety lockout, not a fault you can force through by holding reset — if the boiler can’t light, resetting just repeats the same failed attempt. Ideal boilers also use related codes: F1 for low water pressure, L1 for a low-flow or flow-temperature issue, and F2 for flame loss. The full list is in our boiler fault codes guide.

Common causes of an L2 lockout
An L2 ignition lockout usually comes down to one of a few things: low gas pressure or a gas-supply problem (check whether your other gas appliances work, and the meter or prepayment credit), a blocked or restricted flue, or a fault in the ignition system itself — the ignition electrode, leads, or the gas valve. In cold weather, a frozen condensate pipe can also stop the boiler firing. If the gas supply is fine and nothing is frozen, the ignition side needs testing by a Gas Safe engineer.

What you can safely check yourself
Check that your gas is on — if a gas hob or other appliance also won’t work, it’s a supply issue rather than the boiler (check the meter and any prepayment credit). In cold weather, check whether the external condensate pipe has frozen and thaw it gently with warm water. Then reset the boiler once, following the manual. If L2 returns straight away, stop resetting and call an engineer — repeatedly resetting an ignition lockout won’t fix the underlying cause and isn’t advisable.

A recent Ideal Logic L2 repair in Bow
We were recently called to an Ideal Logic in Bow that was showing an L2 lockout and wouldn’t fire. We diagnosed the cause of the ignition lockout, put it right, and had the boiler lighting and running reliably again — with the price agreed before we started. If your Ideal is showing L2 and it isn’t a gas-supply or frozen-condensate issue, that’s exactly the kind of repair we handle as Ideal engineers across East London.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does L2 mean on an Ideal boiler?
It's an ignition lockout — the boiler tried to light, failed to establish or detect a flame, and shut down safely. It points to gas supply, the flue or the ignition system.
Can I fix an Ideal L2 fault myself?
Sometimes. Check your gas is on (do other appliances work?) and, in winter, thaw a frozen condensate pipe. Reset once — if L2 returns, call a Gas Safe engineer.
Why does my Ideal keep showing L2 after a reset?
The ignition fault is still there. Repeatedly resetting a lockout won't clear it — it needs diagnosing and repairing by an engineer.
Is L2 the same as low pressure?
No — low pressure on an Ideal shows F1. L2 is specifically an ignition lockout. See our fault codes guide for the full list.
Is it safe to keep resetting an L2 lockout?
The boiler locks out to keep you safe. Reset once; if it returns, don't keep resetting — have the cause found and fixed.
Are you Gas Safe registered?
Yes — registration 587401, and we repair Ideal boilers across East London.
What Our Customers Say
Rated 5 stars by homeowners and landlords across East London
“We had our gas cooker installed today. It was done very quickly and efficiently with all the gas safety checks done multiple times. We didn't have a gas pipe, but they kindly brought one for us. They also helped take our old gas cooker downstairs in our block of flats for recycling. Overall very happy with the service and our gas engineer was really friendly. Very effective communication and flexibility. Will definitely be coming back in the future, thank you!”
