Upfront cost — no obligation Choosing between a freestanding cooker, a built-in oven with a separate hob, or a larger range cooker affects both the look of your kitchen and how the installation works. Here’s the difference in plain English, and what each means for fitting.
Freestanding cookers
A freestanding cooker combines the oven, grill and hob in one standalone unit that sits in a gap in your kitchen units, usually with a gas bayonet or isolation valve connection behind it. It’s the simplest and most common setup in East London homes, and generally the most straightforward to install or swap like-for-like, since the connection point and the space for the appliance are already there. Most of the cooker installations we carry out are a freestanding swap for exactly this reason — it’s quick, low-disruption, and rarely needs any changes to the kitchen itself.

Built-in ovens and separate hobs
A built-in setup has the oven fitted into a housing unit, with the gas hob mounted separately into the worktop above. This gives more flexibility over kitchen layout and worktop height, and tends to look neater as part of a fitted kitchen, but it does mean two separate connections rather than one — gas to the hob, and usually electric to the oven and any extractor. It’s a common choice during a fitted kitchen renovation rather than a straight cooker swap, and it’s worth planning the gas point position with your kitchen fitter before the units go in.

Range cookers
A range cooker is a larger, freestanding appliance, often with two ovens and a wider hob, giving more cooking space and flexibility for a bigger household or a keen cook. Because of its size and weight, positioning and connecting a range cooker correctly matters more than with a standard cooker, and the surrounding worktop and ventilation need to suit it. Whichever type you’re considering — freestanding, built-in or range — we can advise on what will work in your kitchen and connect it safely as part of your gas cooker installation.

Frequently Asked Questions
What's the difference between a freestanding and built-in cooker?
A freestanding cooker combines the oven, grill and hob in one unit; a built-in setup has the oven housed separately from the hob, which sits in the worktop.
Which is easier to install?
A freestanding, like-for-like swap is usually the simplest job. Built-in setups and range cookers can involve more planning around the kitchen layout.
Can I switch from built-in to freestanding, or the other way round?
Yes, though it may involve changes to the kitchen units or worktop — we can advise what's involved when we look at the job.
Do range cookers need anything different?
Mainly their size and weight — positioning and connecting them safely takes a bit more care, but the gas connection principles are the same.
